No pardons granted—Presidency

The Office of the President has vehemently refuted reports that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has granted presidential pardons to 11 convicted individuals.

A statement from the presidency, signed by the Director of Communications, Eugene Arhin, on January 6, 2025, clarified that the reports were false.

The statement further emphasised that President Akufo-Addo had not exercised his prerogative of mercy to pardon the individuals in question.

A purported letter suggested consideration by President Akufo-Addo to grant pardons to individuals based on various reasons, including poor health.

The persons listed as beneficiaries included William Ato Essien, who was convicted for his involvement in the collapse of Capital Bank.

However, the Office of the President has urged the public to disregard the information.

“We wish to categorically state that these assertions are inaccurate, and no pardon has been granted by President Akufo-Addo,” the statement added.
