‘No one can influence election results, not even EC chair’ — Dr. Bossman Asare

Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of corporate services, has reassured Ghanaians of the integrity of the country’s electoral process.

Addressing public concerns about the potential manipulation of election results by politically exposed EC officials, Dr. Asare stated unequivocally that the structures and safeguards in place make it impossible for anyone, including the EC Chair, to alter the outcome of elections.

“Even if you are a flagbearer and you are appointed chair, there is nothing you can do,” Dr. Asare said during an interview on Monday, November 25.

He explained that the EC’s operations are guided by strict processes, which are transparent and inclusive of political parties.

“All the electoral processes are carried out in collaboration with the political parties. By law, parties are required to bring their agents to oversee activities such as voter registration, polling, and counting of ballots,” he noted.

Dr. Asare further stressed that ballot counting is done openly, under the watchful eyes of polling agents, the media, and the public.

This transparency ensures that no individual or group can manipulate the results.

“The parties know this,” he added, calling for public confidence in the system during an interaction with TV3.

Special Voting Procedures for December 2

Dr. Asare also outlined the arrangements for special voting, which forms part of the 2024 general elections.

Special voting is scheduled for December 2, ahead of the main polling day on December 7, to accommodate individuals whose official duties would prevent them from voting on election day.

A total of 328 special voting centres have been designated across the country, with no constituency allowed to exceed 750 voters per centre.

“Centres with more than 750 people have been divided to ensure smooth operations,” Dr. Asare explained.

He reminded eligible voters that participating in the special voting exercise is crucial.

“If you are a special voter, go and vote on December 2.

If you don’t vote on that day, your name will not appear on the register on December 7,” he emphasized
