No Ghana Card, no salary for public sector workers from February 2024 – CAGD
The Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has said public sector workers without Ghana Card numbers will have their salaries frozen beginning February 2024.
The directive is part of measures to help eliminate ghost names from the government’s payroll.
According to the CAGD, they had discussions with the National Identification Authority (NIA) in October 2023 regarding a special registration exercise for public sector workers yet to acquire the Ghana Card.
However, the NIA stated their inability to conduct the exercise as they had opened offices nationwide for general registration on September 4, including a focus on targeted public sector employees on the government payroll.
In light of this, CAGD has advised its staff and members to register for their Ghana Cards at any of the 292 NIA offices nationwide.
The Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has adopted a strict approach towards ensuring compliance among government employees.
Meanwhile, the CEO of Margins ID Group, the organization that designed and built the Ghana card, Moses K. Baiden, has said the Ghana Card has a payment application that can be used for financial transactions when activated.
He explained that there are 18 segments on the Ghana Card, including the debit application – saying that “all we need is the legislation and the funds to activate all of them so Ghanaians can see, experience and fully benefit from the power of the Ghana Card”.
