No Christmas for police officers this year

The Deputy Minister for the Interior, Mr. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, has announced the suspension of annual leave for police officers, with those currently on leave being recalled to bolster the operational capacity of the Ghana Police Service (GPS).

This measure is intended to ensure adequate security for both citizens and visitors during the festive season.

In line with these initiatives, the annual leave for officers has been put on hold, and those who are already on leave have been summoned back to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Ghana Police Service (GPS).

While addressing Parliament, Mr. Terlabi indicated that 40 multi-purpose armoured vehicles would be dispatched to key violent crime hotspots throughout the nation to improve police responsiveness and deter criminal activities.

Patrols on highways, as well as day and night mobile patrols, along with snap checks in business districts, transport terminals, beaches, and entertainment venues, have been intensified.

All regional intelligence units have been directed to enhance community information networks, keep an eye on emerging threats, ensure security at social gatherings, and deploy rapid response teams to handle large crowds and emergencies.

Targeted operations in areas with high crime rates are also being organised, with close collaboration between the police and various security agencies to ensure the safety of the public.

In light of the increased commercial activities during the Christmas season, additional uniformed personnel will be assigned to major markets and trading centres in collaboration with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) as well as market associations.

These officers will perform fire safety inspections, eliminate illegal electrical connections, and assist financial institutions and operators.

To alleviate congestion and minimize road accidents during the holiday season, the Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) of the GPS will deploy personnel along highways and urban traffic areas across the nation.

Mr. Terlabi stressed that these initiatives are designed to decrease incidents of robbery, assault, and theft, manage traffic flow, ensure the safe transportation of goods and individuals, create a secure environment for Christmas festivities, and guarantee a peaceful and enjoyable holiday season.
