Chaos erupted in Parliament as the Minority vowed to block all government business until the Ablekuma North Constituency is represented in the legislative body.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin issued the ultimatum during a heated session, demanding that the Electoral Commission (EC) declare the constituency’s election results to ensure representation in parliament.
“The people of Ablekuma North have a right to representation in this House. Until the EC fulfils its mandate, we cannot proceed with business as usual,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
The Minority’s protests disrupted proceedings, sparking heated exchanges and leaving the Majority unable to respond.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin emphasised that the absence of representation undermines democratic principles and compromises Parliament’s legitimacy.
“This is about ensuring every Ghanaian has a voice. The EC must act now to restore confidence in our democracy,” he added.
The standoff degenerated into verbal exchanges as some of the legislators from the Minority Caucus displayed placards to demand action.
With no sign of compromise between the two sides, some members of the Minority walked out of the Chamber, forcing a halt in proceedings.
There is no MP for the Ablekuma North constituency due to a delay in the declaration of election results by the EC after disagreements between the candidates of the NDC and the NPP.
This absence has sparked significant concerns, as it denies constituents their constitutional right to have a voice in legislative decisions.
