The media regulatory body in Ghana, the National Media Commission, NMC, isn’t allowing what it calls ”yellow journalism” to pass without sanctions.
On this occasion, the authority’s reaction points to Accra-based Power FM for what it describes as an ”obscene broadcast” that expressly targeted the Second Lady, Mrs. Samira Bawumia, and her kith and kin, the Fulani Community in Ghana.
The NMC holds Power FM accountable for allowing its medium to be used to ”denigrate” the above-mentioned individual and ethnic group, calling the program in question one that only incites tension.
A statement issued in Accra and signed by the Executive Secretary of the NMC, Mr. George Sarpong, described the behavior displayed on the radio station as an affront to the spirit and letter of the rules upon which social organization in Ghana is based. Part of the NMC statement read ”the behavior has no place in our search for national cohesion, peace, and development.”
Employing the full powers under its remit, the NMC decidedly ordered Power FM to immediately apologize to Mrs. Samira Bawumia, the Fulani Community, and Ghanaians in general, adding that the infamous program breached the sensibilities of the good people of Ghana.
”We expect you to undertake the above and present evidence of same to the Commission before November 11, 2023, after which date you may further hear from the Commission,” the statement concluded.
Below is the NMC letter.
