Nima Brutality: Police place GHC 20,000 bounty on gang leaders

The Ghana Police Service has placed a bounty of GHC20,000.00 on the heads of the gang leaders who fostered the violence, which broke out at Nima on Tuesday.

The gang leaders: Kumodzi, alias “Ibrahim Hussein” and Bombor, alias “Ali Awudu”, are both currently on the run.

The police said anyone with credible information that could lead to the arrest of the “kingpins” would receive that reward.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwesi Ofori, Director-General, Public Affairs, said pictures of the gang leaders would be made available to the media for circulation to aid their prompt arrest.

ACP Ofori said Police had a special plan for such emerging crimes of gangsterism, adding that, special intervention schemes and action plans would be initiated soon to curb such illegal acts.

He said the Police would also continue to work with interest groups, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), youth groups and relevant stakeholders to make sure that wherever the criminal elements existed, they would be dealt with.

“Ghana is a democratic country and we will make sure Police enforces the law to the fullest making sure that Police authority and primacy prevails on the ground in every inch and part of our land and country,” he said.
ACP Ofori said no death had been recorded yet except for three serious injuries.

He said two of the suspects were currently on admission at the Police Hospital under Police guard.

ACP Ofori said one other victim, identified as Appiah, who sustained gunshot injuries was also on admission at the 37 Military Hospital responding to treatment.

He noted that per police intelligence, some other injured gang members had refused to go to open hospitals and were nursing their wounds on their own.

He, however, assured that all such suspects and “cohorts” would be arrested in due time.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Kwasi Ofori, Director of Corporate Affairs, Ghana Police Service, in a press conference at the National Operations Unit, Wednesday, said the Bombom group was led by Ali Awudu while the Kumordzi group was led by Ibrahim Hussein, both on the run.

The Police said it arrested nine suspects, two were picked at their hideouts in Ashalaja, a suburb in Accra with pump action guns, a set of security uniforms and unregistered motorbikes.

The suspects are Abdul Aziz Sulewa, Imoro Ibrahim, Bashiru Ganiyu, Mohammed Bariyu, Atariwa Basu ul Gafaru Mohammed, Eliasu Salim, Gariba Abdul Moomen and Issah Seidu.

Some weapons were also retrieved from the crime scene. They are: unregistered motorbikes, a camouflage uniform of a security service and 12 empty cartridges of spent ammunition fired at the grounds.

The rest are: live bullets, 3AA ammunition, one pistol magazine, two machetes, two knives, a
pistol believed to be a toy gun and two mobile phones.
