NIA staff declare strike over delayed service scheme

The Divisional Executives Council of the Public Services Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, National Identification Authority (NIA) Division, has declared a strike, effective Monday, October 7, 2024.

In a statement dated October 6, the NIA staff said the industrial action has been necessitated by the government’s delay in implementing a newly approved service scheme.

The group said the delay undermines their rights and expectations as employees, while describing it as a blatant betrayal of trust and a direct attack on their well-being.

“After exhaustive patience and repeated demands, we regret to inform you that your unacceptable failure to operationalise the newly approved Scheme of Service (SoS) has compelled us to take this decisive action beginning Monday, October 7, 2024,” the group said.

They added that their members would not call off the strike until the scheme of service has been fully operationalised.

This comes after the NIA staff embarked on an indefinite strike in June 2024.

The group said the action was taken because the government failed to provide better conditions of service for NIA staff.

It also cited several factors, including the government’s failure to address undue delays in the negotiation process and the inability to grant institution-specific allowances to NIA staff.

The strike was, however, called off after a few days following an agreement with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to address their concerns.
