A tense confrontation unfolded at Atasemanso after some constituents allegedly threatened the Member of Parliament (MP) for Nhyiaeso Constituency, Dr. Stephen Amoah, with a toy gun.
Information gathered indicates that the youth were demanding updates on the construction of an Astroturf pitch in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the youth, including party supporters, arrived at the MP’s campaign grounds with toy guns, firing them in the air and cheering.
However, things took a turn when they confronted Dr. Amoah, prompting him to allegedly pull a gun in self-defence.
Jimmy Boakye Ansah, spokesperson for the NPP in the Nhyiaeso Constituency, confirmed the incident, stating that the MP had to defend himself after being caught off guard by the youth.
Mr Ansah explained that the MP had a good discussion with the youth and even gave them some money, but one of them pulled out a toy gun, forcing Dr. Amoah to react.
The incident highlights a growing trend in Kumasi, where young people have been using toy guns, firing them for fun.
However, the Ghana Police Service has cautioned the public, particularly the youth, to desist from this behaviour, as it constitutes an offence under the Criminal Offences Act of 1960.
In a related development, the police have arrested 26 individuals for brandishing and firing toy guns indiscriminately in a public space.
The police have warned that such behaviour will not be tolerated and have urged citizens to report similar incidents to ensure public safety.
