Abrepo traders demand answers over GH¢200 relocation fee

Some traders at Abrepo Junction in Kumasi have confronted officials during a demolition exercise, demanding an explanation over GH¢200 payments they allegedly made for alternative trading spaces.

The traders claim they were asked to pay the amount with assurances that they would be relocated to new spaces. However, they say no suitable locations have been provided and are now calling for the money to be accounted for.

The confrontation occurred on Thursday, October 8, as the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) began clearing structures and trading activities along the Abrepo Junction corridor.

The exercise forms part of preparations for Phase One of the Suame Interchange Project, which includes the construction of overpasses at Abrepo and Krofrom and the widening of sections of the Eastern and Western Bypass roads.

The KMA had earlier directed affected traders to vacate the area and indicated that those requiring alternative trading spaces could move to the Racecourse Market.

However, some traders say the relocation arrangement has not met their expectations and are demanding clarity over the alleged GH¢200 payments.

The issue has heightened tensions at the demolition site, with reports indicating that some traders also clashed with security personnel deployed to maintain order.
