Newborn rescued from public latrine in Obuasi

A newborn baby boy is alive due to the quick actions of firefighters in Obuasi, who successfully rescued him after he was abandoned in a public latrine.

The incident occurred at Ahansonyewodea, a community in Obuasi East, where the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) received a distress call around 10:30 PM on Sunday, July 20.

A team from the Obuasi Fire Station, led by STNO II Appiah Kubi, rushed to the scene.

Using an extension ladder, the crew carefully descended into the latrine and, by 11:31 PM, pulled the baby out, alive was quickly taken to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital for urgent medical care.

In a Facebook post, the Fire Service praised the responders for their courage and quick action, saying the team showed “unwavering commitment to saving lives, even the tiniest among us”.

“It’s a miracle the child survived,” said Ama Mensah, a nearby resident.

“But what kind of society are we becoming when babies are left in places like that?” she questioned.

As authorities work to track down those responsible, many are calling for both justice and deeper social interventions.

Meanwhile, authorities say the baby is stable and receiving the best of care.
