New Black Stars will include more Ghanaian players born in Europe – C.K Akonnor

Black Stars head coach, Charles Akonnor, says his quest to transform the national team into an AFCON winning side will include the addition of more foreign-born Ghanaian footballers.

Akonnor said his meeting with such players during his Europe tour revealed many of such players are willing to make a national team switch.

Among the tall list of players, he is considering include Anderlecht youngster Jeremy Doku; French-born, Elisha Owusu; and Tarique Fosu who was handed his debut call-up in March.

According to him, the GFA is already in talks with Arsenal’s sensational forward Eddie Nketiah to switch camps despite playing for England’s Under 21 team.

In an interview with Starr Fm, the former captain said, he is in constant communication with many others, including  Nketiah.

“The most important thing is those who were born in Europe,” Akonnor said.

“Some of them are eager to play for the Black Stars.

“That is what we want to do. Look at Nigeria, I think they have done that in a very nice way.

“They have brought a lot of guys who were born in Europe and the Nigerian team is now transformed. So we are trying to do the same with the national team,” he concluded.

CK Akonnor is yet to take charge of his first assignment as head coach after the 2021 AFCON qualifiers were postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
