The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, has announced to party members aspiring to contest in the upcoming 2026 internal elections that the constitutional regulations regarding resignation will be rigorously upheld.
During a meeting at the party’s headquarters, Kwetey elaborated that any individual occupying a government-appointed role is required to resign at least six months before submitting their nomination forms.
“Any individual intending to run for a party position who currently holds an office appointed by the president must resign at least six clear months before submitting nomination forms,” he stated.
He further clarified that this regulation does not pertain to board members or individuals in honorary roles, as they are not considered full-time employees.
“Those who are full-time employees are subject to this rule,” he stressed.
Kwetey enumerated the categories included under this directive.
“The officials affected include, but are not limited to, ministers and deputy ministers, chief executive officers and managing directors along with their deputies, and metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives,” he remarked.
He also mentioned that official guidelines have been released to promote transparency. “All of you will have access to them,” he assured.
To provide further clarity, Kwetey specified the timelines.
“Those contesting at the constituency level must resign by April 2026. For the regional level, resignations are due by May 2026. At the national level, resignations should occur by June 2026,” he indicated.
He cautioned against attempts to seek exemptions.
“These provisions are strict, constitutional, and will be enforced. Please do not attempt to come and plead for exceptions. There is no room for negotiation in this matter,” he added.
His statements come at a crucial time as the party gears up for significant internal elections.
Recently, five candidates were approved to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary following vetting at the Greater Accra Regional Office.
The approved candidates are Mohammed Ramme, Amina Adam, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Yakubu Azindow, and Najib Mohammed.
