NDC’s Bernard Baidoo wins Akwatia parliamentary seat

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate Bernard Bediako Baidoo has won the Akwatia by-election held today, September 2, 2025.

He won the election by obtaining 18,199 votes, while his closest contender, Solomon Kwame Asumadu from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), secured 15,235 votes.

Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Progressive Party (LPP), however, polled only 82 votes.

Out of the total ballots cast, 33,819 were valid, while 303 were rejected across 119 polling stations.

Despite slight confrontations between some NDC and NPP Executives in the morning of the exercise, the electoral process went on smoothly without any major violence due to heavy security deployed to the voting centres.

This by-election was necessitated by the death of the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mr. Ernest Kumi, on July 7, 2025.

In the 2024 general election, the late Ernest Yaw Kumi of the NPP won the Akwatia parliamentary seat by a margin of 2,063 votes, defeating the NDC’s Henry Yiadom Boakye.

Mr Kumi received approximately 19,269 votes, while Boakye garnered around 17,206 votes.
