NDC to trigger recall of parliament to compel EC to audit register

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has indicated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) may request a recall of Parliament to force the Electoral Commission (EC) to audit the voter register.

During the party’s nationwide protest against the EC in Accra, Dr. Forson said a forensic audit of the provisional voter register is needed to ensure that the 2024 elections are free and fair.

“We believe that the voter’s register must be audited. The level of tampering we’ve observed so far makes it impossible to proceed without a proper review. This audit will help us understand the extent of the issue and fix the system,” Dr. Forson said.

Expressing concerns over the alleged anomalies detected in the register, he cited a situation in his constituency where several names had been added to the transfer register.

“In my own constituency, we’ve uncovered the addition of about 3,000 names in the transfer register and several instances of multiple names. In total, the register has been bloated by roughly 5,000 names. This raises serious concerns, and we need Parliament to intervene.

“So what you are seeing today is just the first step. We will undertake a series of activities, including a possible recall of Parliament for us to compel the Electoral Commissioners to do what is required,” he added.

The NDC is currently protesting in all 16 regions across the country after raising concerns over alleged discrepancies in the 2024 voter register.

The discrepancies were identified after the EC released the provisional voters register to the party and other political parties contesting in the 2024 election.

The NDC is calling for a forensic audit of the register, which it said will enhance the credibility of the upcoming general elections.

EC, however, insists that there is no need for a forensic audit as the issues the NDC is raising are normal occurrences that will be resolved before election day.
