The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended its Northern Regional Vice Chairman, Alhaji Gbewa, following an attack on the regional treasurer.
Alhaji Gbewa reportedly assaulted Hajia Shamima Yakubu during a stakeholder meeting to discuss campaign strategy in Tamale.
The meeting, which took place over the weekend, turned chaotic after disagreements over party finances got heated.
Hajia Yakubu suffered injuries to her face, resulting in her treatment at the hospital.
Gbewa was subsequently arrested and released on bail.
Speaking to the media, Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Grande said that the officer had been suspended for three months after deliberations between national and regional executives in Accra.
He said the party was investigating the case and “all other processes that will enable the party to look into the issues properly for a final redress”.
Meanwhile, a group of NDC youth, known as the Gbewa youth group, locked up the Northern Regional office of the party in protest over the detention of Alhaji Gbewa.
The youth also threatened to lock up every NDC office in the metropolis if their demands were not met.
They demanded the release of the party’s vice chairman, who was detained by the police after he turned himself in.
