NDC supporters besiege Tamale High Court over bench warrant for Savelugu MP

Some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) thronged the Tamale High Court over a bench warrant issued for the arrest of the Member of Parliament for Savelugu.

The supporters converged in front of the Court on Monday, April 3, 2023, after the warrant was issued on Friday, March 31.

The bench warrant for the arrest of Abdulai Jacob Iddrisu was issued by Presiding Judge Justice Richard Kogyapwah after the MP failed to show up in court for a 2020 case.

He was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm alongside Naa Mohammed Ahmed, the Chief of Duko, who is facing five counts of the same charge.

But appearing in court on Monday, Mr. Iddrisu was accompanied by scores of supporters as well as some MPs and regional NDC executives.

On December 9, 2020, state prosecutors said they found an AK-47 rifle and 60 rounds of ammunition in an office that is said to belong to the MP.

Naa Mohammed Ahmed was said to have a round of G3 ammunition, a BB live cartridge, and 72 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.

NDC, however, rejected the claim, stating that its office was an open space and that the weapons might have been planted there deliberately.

The case was subsequently taken to court but since the case began, the MP has not been in court.

The Chief State Attorney, therefore, appealed for a warrant for the MP’s arrest, a plea which was granted last Friday.
