NDC MPs petition for removal of EC chair

Story By: Stephen Awua

Two Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fred Agbenyo and Thomas Tsekpo, have launched a fresh petition demanding the removal of Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa.

The move adds to ongoing political tensions surrounding Ghana’s electoral governance, with the NDC raising concerns about the credibility and independence of the Electoral Commission.

While details of the petition have not been fully disclosed, similar past calls by the NDC have cited alleged irregularities in election management, particularly following the 2020 general elections.

The party has repeatedly questioned decisions taken by the EC, arguing that they undermine public confidence in Ghana’s democratic processes.

Jean Mensa, who was appointed in 2018, has defended the Commission’s record, maintaining that Ghana’s elections remain transparent, credible, and in line with constitutional requirements.

The EC has also pointed to reforms such as the introduction of a new voter register and technological improvements aimed at enhancing electoral integrity.

Ghana is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most stable democracies, having conducted multiple peaceful transfers of power since the Fourth Republic began in 1992. However, electoral disputes and political disagreements continue to shape public discourse, especially during election cycles.

Legal experts note that removing an EC Chair requires a formal constitutional process, including the establishment of a prima facie case and investigations by a committee, making such petitions complex and lengthy.

The latest petition by the NDC MPs is therefore expected to trigger renewed debate over electoral reforms, institutional independence, and the future of Ghana’s democratic governance.
