Governs Kwame Agbodza, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Adaklu, insists that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus will occupy the Majority seats when the House reconvenes on Thursday, November 7.
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, has summoned the House to reconvene on Thursday, following a request by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus urging a return after an indefinite adjournment.
The suspension followed a dispute over which party held the majority position in Parliament due to the Speaker’s declaration of four seats vacant.
The affected MPs decided to cross carpets ahead of the upcoming December 7 elections.
Speaking at a rally in the Volta Region, Mr Agbodza said he would return to the House as the Majority Chief Whip as the four MPs whose seats were declared vacant have not rescinded the decision to cross carpet.
He cited Article 97 of the 1992 Constitution, arguing that it supports the vacancy of these seats and validates his stance on the majority position.
“I’ll be going to Parliament on Thursday as the Majority Chief Whip and I’ll come back as Majority Chief Whip. Whoever doesn’t like it, can do whatever he or she likes.
“As far as I am concerned, the four colleagues have vacated their seats in accordance with Article 97, since they are not going to renege on that decision not to contest, they are no longer valid Members of Parliament,” he emphasized.
It will be recalled that the Supreme Court on Friday, October 18, directed Parliament to recognise and allow the four MPs to continue to serve as lawmakers until a substantive case is determined.
A countersuit by the Speaker was subsequently rejected by the Apex Court.
