NDC annuls Amenfi Central parliamentary primaries; orders rerun

Source The Ghana Report

Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has annulled the parliamentary primaries held in the Amenfi Central constituency on May 13, 2023.

The primaries had been the subject of litigation after five contestants sued the winner Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the NDC, and the Electoral Commission.

Joana Gyan Cudjoe emerged victorious with 756 votes, beating incumbent MP, Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah, who followed closely with 575 votes.

The plaintiffs alleged that Ms Cudjoe forged her voter ID and NDC party card.

They, therefore, asked the Sekondi High Court to annul the parliamentary primaries and order a rerun.

In a statement signed by the General Secretary of NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, on September 4, 2024, the party has decided to annul the primaries and has ordered a rerun of the election.

“The party at its meeting has decided to annul the election and to rerun same. Accordingly, the parliamentary primaries conducted on the 13th May, 2023 in Amenfi Central has been annulled forthwith,” the statement said.

The party leadership has also opened fresh nominations for interested applicants, beginning Friday, September 6.

Meanwhile, voting is expected to take place on Sunday, September 8, 2024.
