NDC absent as PNC boycotts IPAC meeting to discuss voter registration

The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is absent from a meeting of political parties to discuss voter registration exercise to be rolled out by the Electoral Commission.

Theghanareport.com reporter, David Alamisi, also said the People’s National Convention (PNC) has boycotted an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held at the EC headquarters in Accra.

The PNC is protesting the arrangement of the EC to divide political parties into two groups as part of safety protocols in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

PNC National Organiser, Desmond Twumasi Ntow stormed out of the premises of the EC shortly after the meeting commenced on Tuesday, May 27.

In all 16 parties were scheduled to meet the EC officials on Tuesday, eight at different times of the day. The EC adopted the arrangement due to the restrictions imposed on public gatherings and protocols to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Mr Ntow told theghanareport.com that the PNC petitioned the EC to have a bigger venue to accommodate all the political parties at a time.

“We told them why don’t you look out for a bigger space where all the political parties can sit around a table and then have discussions going forward into whatever you (EC) want to do.”

This, he said, was to avoid a situation where communication and discussions would be different for each group.

He said they officially petitioned the EC “but there was no response so my National Chairman asked me to come and find out why they have not responded to our letter”.

He said when he got to Tuesday’s meeting, “The only comment I got from Dr Bossman was that ‘if you have not gotten a response then why are you here’?

He said he was left with no choice but “to walk out”.
