National Theatre workers demand removal of Executive Director over mismanagement
Some staff of the National Theatre are demanding the immediate removal of their Executive Director, Amy Frimpong, citing claims of mismanagement and a lack of worker promotions for the past 12 years.
According to the workers, Amy Frimpong is not managing the national asset well, and he must be replaced with a capable individual who will utilize the funds generated from the facility.
The dilapidated state of the National Theatre has been a concern to many Ghanaians.
It will be recalled that the General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church and Chancellor of the Central University College, Dr Mensa Otabil, recently commented on the state of the National Theatre of Ghana, describing the edifice as being “under severe malnourishment”.
Several event organizers, patrons, and other players in the creative arts industry have also complained bitterly about the state of the facility.
In 2022, Fiifi Coleman, the actor who doubles as a producer, said: “When I did my last play, I bought mosquito repellent myself to spray the entire building before the guests could come in because it was just unbearable; and it’s coming out of my pocket”.
“It is so pathetic that the National Theatre has me providing my own talk-back. It is one of the least things you can even expect from the National Theater…you will rent your own light to do a production. Your own sound, it cost me almost GH¢7,000 to get sound during my last play at the National Theater,” he fumed.
The National Theatre, which serves as a recreational centre for most national events, has been in existence for over 30 years.
