National Security trying to cover up death of 2 youths in Akan constituency- MP
The Member of Parliament for Akan Constituency in the Oti Region, Yao Gomado, has alleged that the National Security Ministry is trying to cover up the deaths of two young men from the Akan constituency.
According to the MP, the National Security’s account of the events surrounding the unfortunate incident is inaccurate.
The Ministry of National Security, in a release issued on December 27, refuted accusations by the MP for Akan Constituency, Yao Gomado, that two people killed in an accident were deliberately targeted by the ministry’s operatives.
According to the ministry, an operation was launched in October 2023 aimed at curbing cocoa smuggling along the Eastern Corridor, impacting the Akan Constituency directly.
A surge in smuggling activities had reportedly reduced cocoa sales to Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs), prompting the intervention.
According to the ministry, the operation led to some arrests, with cocoa beans seized.
However, tragedy struck on December 25, 2023, when a team vehicle “accidentally” collided with a motorcycle, killing both riders.
Reacting to this, the MP said, “I think the National Security are just trying to cover up. They should bury their heads in shame ..”
The legislator revealed that when his attention was drawn to the incident, he subsequently contacted the District Chief Executive (DCE) to verify the details. However, the DCE declined to provide any information.
Mr Gomado mentioned that after being denied information from the DCE, he reached out to an officer who had gone to investigate the accident scene and narrated what had transpired.
“He told me that the so-called National Security operatives were chasing a taxi suspected of carrying cocoa on the Eastern corridor road to Koto-Nkwanta. Their lights were off, and they moved out from their lane to the opposite lane to cross the taxi; in so doing, they crashed with the two young men – footballers, which resulted in their death,” he accounted.
The legislature asserted that he did not fabricate any information contrary to the claim by the National Security. He maintained that he reported based on information he gathered regarding the tragic incident.
He added that he expected the National Security to appreciate how the situation was handled and urged the grieving families to remain patient.
He assured that investigations would be conducted with the help of the government to bring justice.
