National Sanitation Day: AMA to embark on final clean-up exercise tomorrow

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has scheduled the third and final National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise for this year for tomorrow, Saturday, December 13, 2025, starting from 6:00 a.m. across the city.

Originally set for 6 December, the exercise was postponed to accommodate celebrations marking the 41st National Farmers and Fishers’ Day.

The AMA said the new date ensures full participation and effective enforcement of sanitation regulations.

The Assembly described the year-end NSD as strategically crucial, noting that the festive season brings increased commercial activity, higher waste volumes, and added pressure on Accra’s sanitation infrastructure.

Under the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (Communal Labour) Bye-Laws, 2017, all markets, shops, and business premises are required to close during the exercise to allow residents to participate in communal labour.

Activities planned for the day include sweeping streets, clearing drains, brushing road medians, and removing illegal.

Designated clean-up areas will include Chorkor and Chemu Naa, where inner lanes and drains will be cleared of debris, Dogo Beach, where solid waste along the shoreline will be eliminated, and Graphic Road and Agbogbloshie, where major drains, road shoulders, and dumping sites will be cleaned to enhance sanitation and traffic flow.

The AMA has confirmed that teams of Public Health Officers, Sanitation Taskforce personnel, and labourers will be deployed across all sub-metros, supported by trucks and tippers to ensure effective waste collection and disposal.

Residents are reminded that noncompliance with the sanitation directive constitutes an offence, punishable by fines of up to 100 penalty units, imprisonment ranging from 30 days to six months, or both. Repeat offenders may incur additional daily penalties.

The Assembly further urged all residents, traders, landlords, tenants, and business operators to participate actively in the clean-up, desilt drains in front of their premises, and maintain a clean environment.

“As we approach the festive season, collective responsibility is vital to keeping Accra clean, safe, and resilient. Every effort counts towards a liveable metropolis for all,” the Assembly said.
