The running mate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 presidential election, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), is grateful for being selected to partner with the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

In a message of appreciation, after the National Council of the NPP unanimously approved his nomination on Thursday, July 4, 2024, Dr Opoku Prempeh called on all party members to unite for victory at the December polls.

“I call upon all our members to join hands as we collectively strive to achieve our ambitious goal of transforming Ghana into a prosperous nation,” he stated. “As I assume the role of running mate alongside my esteemed boss, H.E. Dr Bawumia, I am committed to supporting him to prosecute a formidable 2024 campaign to break the 8-year election cycle and serve our beloved country diligently. Let us work together towards a brighter future for Ghana”.

The new role was officially announced after Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s nomination had been presented to the Majority Caucus in Parliament.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia had already informed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh is his choice as running mate for the December 2024 elections.

After deliberation by the leaders of the party, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, announced at a press conference in Accra that, “Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has a great working relationship with our Presidential Candidate, H.E Alhaji Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia. The synergy between these two great leaders on our presidential ticket, coupled with their proven track-record and transformational campaign message would help the New Patriotic Party to secure a resounding third consecutive electoral victory on the 7th of December 2024, by the grace of God”.

The December presidential contest is mainly between Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP and former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The stakes for the race are high as the NPP seeks to win a third term, while Mr Mahama and the NDC want to avoid a third consecutive defeat.

On December 7, Ghanaians will vote for a new president and 275 MPs.

This will be the country’s ninth consecutive election since returning to constitutional rule in 1992.
