Nana elevates 15 assemblies
President Nana Akufo-Addo has granted executive approval for the upgrade of 15 municipal and district assemblies’ status in the country.
According to an approval document, three municipalities have been upgraded to a metropolis status while 12 districts have also been upgraded to a municipality status.
According to the document, the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region, Gomoa East Municipal Assembly in the Central Region and Techiman Municipal Assembly in the Bono East Region have been elevated to the status of metropolis.
Meanwhile, the Bole District Assembly in the Savannah Region, Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly, Atwima Kwanwoma District Assembly, Atwima Nwabiagya North District Assembly, Obuasi East District Assembly, Sekyere South District Assembly; all in the Ashanti Region, have been elevated to municipality.
Also, the Ningo-Prampram District Assembly in the Greater Accra Region, Anloga District Assembly and South Tongu District Assembly in the Volta Region, Shama District Assembly in the Western Region, Techiman North District Assembly and Pru East District Assembly in the Bono East Region have been elevated to the status of municipality.
According to sources, the approval follows recommendations presented by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development for the elevation of the assemblies.
This was based on several petitions from chiefs and people demanding the upgrading of their districts or municipalities to the sector ministry.
The petitioners claimed the upgrade will deepen good governance, and decentralisation, as well as meet the needs and aspirations of the citizenry.
The ministry’s technical team thus reviewed the issues espoused by the petitioners and analysed the population figures of the districts or municipalities from which petitions were received. “After careful reviews, analysis and consultations with key stakeholders, the Technical Team respectfully recommended the proposed list of districts and municipalities to be elevated to municipalities and metropolises except Ho, Offinso North and Birim North, which did meet the population criterion (i.e. metropolitan status = 250,000+ and municipal status = 95,000+),” the source said.
