‘I declare Nana Akufo-Addo as President-elect’ – EC relieves anxious nation

The Electoral Commission has declared President Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2020 presidential elections, securing a second-term which eluded his predecessor, John Mahama.

Chairperson of the commission, Jean Mensa, announced that “at the end of the polls Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo obtained 6,730, 413 votes being 51.59% of the total valid votes.”

“John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress obtained 6,214, 889 being 47.36% of the total valid votes cast,” she said as Ghanaians glued to their TV sets would feel relief from several hours of anxiety.

The EC chair put the valid votes at 13, 434, 574, which is 79% of registered voters.

Jean Mensa said the results exclude the results of Techiman South constituency which is in dispute. But she explained that if that result is gifted to John Mahama, it will not make a difference.

The results have confirmed theghanareport.com’s projection that Nana Akufo-Addo has won the election.

Mr Akufo-Addo prevailed after a lingering dissatisfaction with the slow release of results from the Electoral  Commission.

In the parliamentary elections, Ghana’s parliament for the first time since 1992 is hanged.

With four more constituencies to go, the NPP has 136 seats, the NDC 134 and one independent candidate.
