President Nana Akufo-Addo is hoping the construction and rehabilitation of inner-city roads of Accra and Kumasi will begin in 2020 as part of the Sinohydro deal between Ghana and China.

Speaking at a meeting with the Vice Premier of China, Sun Chunlan at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo said the country’s roads will see some facelift in some months to come.

Four of the projects have been approved by Sinosure and “we are anticipating that by the end of this year, all four projects will have taken place,” the President said.

President Akufo-Addo is also hopeful the remaining six projects, especially the construction of Accra Inner City Roads, currently under evaluation by Sinosure, will be approved by the end of 2019.

This will allow for work to commence in 2020.

“My hope will be that the rest of the phase of the project will be concluded for us as early as next year. One of those also revolves around the construction of the inner city roads in Accra, the capital. So it is a matter of considerable significance for us especially if we can have it done next year.”

About Sinohydro deal

The $2 billion Sinohydro deal is meant to facilitate the construction of a number of infrastructural projects in Ghana.

The first four projects under Phase 1 of the Sinohydro deal or Sinohydro Master Project Support Agreement are the Tamale Interchange, Prestea and Cape Coast Inner City Roads, the upgrade of selected feeder roads in the Ashanti and Western Region, and the Hohoe-Jasikan-Dodo Papesu roads.

The Vice President has cut the sod for these projects to begin on the 18th of November 2019.

The purpose of the Vice Premiere’s visit was to implement the agreements reached between President Xi Jinping and President Akufo-Addo, at the 3rd Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Co-operation (FOCAC), held in Beijing, last year.
