Court of appeal dismisses NAM1’s request to halt trial

Nana Appiah Mensah, widely known as NAM1, has hit another roadblock in his ongoing legal battle as the Court of Appeal has rejected his request to stop his criminal trial.

On Monday, May 19, a three-member panel of appellate judges dismissed an application filed by NAM1 and his companies, Menzgold Ghana Limited and Brew Marketing Consult.

The group had sought to pause the criminal trial, which involves 39 charges ranging from defrauding investors to money laundering.

NAM1’s legal team argued that proceedings should be halted until an appeal challenging a High Court decision was resolved.

That earlier ruling required NAM1 to present his defence after the court determined the prosecution had built a strong case.

State prosecutors countered that the request was unfounded and designed to delay justice. The Court of Appeal agreed, with Justices Gbiel Suurbaareh, Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe, and Christopher Archer ruling unanimously against the application.

The trial is now set to continue on May 28.

Speaking after the decision, NAM1 expressed his intent to keep pushing through the legal system. “We haven’t reached the end. We’ll take advantage of every legal option available, including possibly heading to the Supreme Court,” he told reporters.

The charges stem from Menzgold’s gold investment scheme between 2016 and 2018. Prosecutors allege that more than 16,000 people were persuaded to invest in the scheme, which led to losses estimated at over GH₵340 million.

With the trial moving forward, many of the affected investors are hoping for justice after years of uncertainty.
