In a move aimed at protecting public health and strengthening the fight against illegal drugs, the Northern Regional Command of the Narcotics Control Commission (NCC) has destroyed narcotic substances valued at about GH¢2.5 million.
The drugs destroyed included boxes of Tafrado 120mg, Tramaking, blisters of Tramadol, boxes of Royal 225mg, and quantities of marijuana.
These items were narcotic exhibits previously kept at the Circuit Court Registry in Tamale.
The destruction followed a court order issued by His Honour Francis Ayamwuni Asobayire after the successful prosecution of individuals involved in trafficking the substances.
The exercise was carried out at the Gbalahi Landfill site near Tamale and was witnessed by representatives of key state institutions, including the Ghana Police Service, as well as members of the media.
Speaking at the event, the Northern Regional Commander of the NCC, Mr Issahaque Bakuri, explained that the exercise was part of ongoing efforts to curb the smuggling, distribution, and abuse of illicit drugs across the country.
“We are taking frantic measures to combat drug abuse and promote a healthier society in the region and the country at large,” he said.
He noted that security officers had been stationed at entry points across the region, and efforts were being made to strengthen surveillance and control at both approved and unapproved entry routes to address the drug menace.
Mr Bakuri urged individuals battling drug addiction to seek counselling and rehabilitation services.
