Muntaka dismisses takeover claims over security recruitment

Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has rejected claims that his ministry has hijacked the recruitment process of the country’s security services, insisting that current arrangements are meant to protect fairness and public confidence.

The minister spoke to journalists at the Christ the King Church in Accra, where applicants seeking to join the Ghana Immigration Service are undergoing screening.

He described the exercise as orderly and respectful, adding that it reflects President John Dramani Mahama’s broader vision of treating citizens who wish to serve the nation with dignity.

According to Mr Muntaka, concerns about political interference stem from resistance to reforms aimed at reducing human involvement in the recruitment process.

He said the new approach limits opportunities for manipulation that had become familiar to many applicants and middlemen over the years.

He explained that although the recruitment is centrally monitored, the individual security agencies still conduct their own processes.

The centralisation, he noted, allows the Interior Ministry to track progress across the services and ensure that agreed standards are followed.

Mr Muntaka acknowledged that the number of applicants far exceeds the available slots, a situation he said makes transparency essential to avoid frustration and unrest.

He argued that without a clear and fair system, the recruitment exercise could easily descend into confusion and public distrust.

He assured applicants and the general public that the ministry will continue to play its oversight role while allowing the security services to carry out their mandates, stressing that the goal is a recruitment process that is credible, open, and trusted by all.
