MultiChoice agrees to reduce subscription fees – Sam George
Minister of Communications, Sam George, has confirmed that MultiChoice Ghana has agreed to reduce its subscription prices, following sustained regulatory pressure and government intervention.
The breakthrough comes after MultiChoice submitted long-awaited pricing data requested by the government.
The release of this information has now paved the way for the establishment of a Pricing Review Committee, tasked with determining a fair and transparent pricing structure for subscribers.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, September 5, the Minister announced that the committee has been officially formed and given a deadline of September 21 to finalise the new pricing framework.
He noted that while progress is underway, it will take up to 24 days for the full process to be completed.
This marks a major shift in what had become a high-stakes standoff between the government and MultiChoice.
The Communications Ministry had earlier issued a firm ultimatum, demanding a 30% reduction in subscription prices by September 6, or risk the suspension of MultiChoice’s broadcasting license.
The directive was backed by a daily penalty of GH¢10,000 for non-compliance, which had accumulated to approximately GH¢150,000 over the 24 days since the order was issued.
Minister Sam George confirmed that these accrued fines will be enforced and collected, even as the pricing review process moves forward.
