MTN blames data challenges on cable cut in Europe

Telecommunication giant MTN Ghana has blamed the recent data hitches on its network on a cable cut in Europe.

This comes after series of complaints by MTN subscribers over the slow and unstable connection.

The company said in a circular to its shareholders and other stakeholders on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) that the challenges were as a result of a “double undersea fibre optic cable cut in Europe.”

According to MTN, the cut on the West Africa Cable System (WACS) had equally affected other operators and customers in West Africa.

It was, however, quick to add that it was working assiduously to resolve the matter.

The company rendered an apology to its customers over the connectivity challenges being experienced over the last 24-hours.

In the circular, the telecom giant said “MTN Ghana is aware of the issues affecting mobile data connectivity across Ghana and many areas in West Africa. This is as a result of a double undersea fibre optic cable cut in Europe.

It continued that it was working with its international providers “to restore connectivity as quickly as possible.”

“This situation is affecting all operators and customers in the West Africa region due to cut on the West Africa Cable System (WACS).

“The West Africa Cable system is an ultra-high capacity fibre optic submarine cable which links Europe, West Africa and South Africa. It connects 14 countries over two continents, it said.

It added that “MTN has already begun work to restore traffic through other channels and will continue to use alternative routes of connectivity and additional capacity to ease the congestion until the situation is resolved.

It assured the company would not rest “until we have restored all services for our customers.”
