The Minister of State-designate in charge of Special Initiatives at the Presidency, Emmanuel Agyekum. has pledged to encourage legislators to transition to electric vehicles (EVs) if approved by the parliamentary vetting committee.

According to Mr. Agyekum, this initiative aligns with Ghana’s broader energy transition strategy and efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.

“We have been discussing energy transition and efficiency, and it is something we can achieve. For example, we can install solar systems on our buildings and encourage MPs to drive electric vehicles to Parliament, positioning it as one of the most environmentally friendly legislatures in the world,” he stated during his vetting on Tuesday, January 28.

The push for EV adoption is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

President John Dramani Mahama has been a strong advocate for climate action in Ghana and across Africa.

Under his leadership, the Ministry for Special Initiatives was established to spearhead innovative solutions for national development.

Additionally, the previous administration introduced electric buses, which are currently in operation in Accra, reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to green energy and sustainability.
