MPs, Staff to be tested for COVID-19 again

The Majority Leader, Osei- Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has disclosed that parliament’s medical team will once again schedule COVID-19 testing for Members of Parliament and staff.

This will be the third time MPs and parliament staff will be tested for the disease.

Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s announced the decision on the back of reports last week that some MPs, staff and journalists who tested positive for COVID-19 had failed to self-isolate.

Speaking at a media encounter, the Majority Leader, who is also the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, said the exercise would be done before the house goes on recess.

“I think it is important we have a third one so that we will be clear in our minds. I have tested negative on two occasions, but it does not mean I am outside the realm of infections.

“If you have it and you recover, the good thing for you will mean you have succeeded in building sufficient antibodies and that for the next one year, you will be able to resist it, but if I test negative on two, three occasions, all that it means is that I have not come into contact with the virus,” he told the media.

Two MPs test positive for COVID-19

Initial testing conducted on the orders of the Speaker revealed two MPs and 13 parliamentary staff had tested positive for the virus.

Parliament denied the media reports, but the Minority Chief Whip, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, insisted two of his colleagues had indeed tested positive for the virus.

“What happened in Parliament and what you heard [about MPs testing positive for COVID-19] is the fact. It is the truth,” Mr. Muntaka said.
