Fire has destroyed a moving Nissan Micra car with registration number GN 1942-22 at Galilea on the Accra-Kasoa Highway in the Ga South Municipality.
The driver, who was travelling from Kasoa to Accra, was rushed to the hospital after being found unconscious.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver had stopped to investigate overheating issues.
Upon opening the bonnet, he discovered fire from the engine.
Despite attempting to extinguish the flames using a fire extinguisher from nearby shops, the fire proved too intense, and the driver lost consciousness.
The vehicle was completely engulfed in flames before fire officers from the Weija Division arrived.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
According to the driver, he was tired and dozed off behind the wheel.
“I was driving and suddenly I dozed off,” he recounted.
“I regained consciousness and saw that the car had crashed into a pole. I tried to drive away but realized the car was on fire”.
He said he quickly alerted the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) headquarters but their delayed response allowed the fire to spread.
Despite their efforts, the car was reduced to ashes by the time the fire was brought under control.
An eyewitness explained, “The driver’s lapse in attention was the cause of the accident and subsequent fire.”
He further urged all drivers to be careful on the road to avoid such occurrences.
