Move to oust Chief Justice premeditated – Oppong Nkrumah
Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has dismissed ongoing efforts to remove the Chief Justice as a politically motivated and premeditated move.
Speaking on Thursday, May 29, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said that while the Chief Justice would rightfully defend herself, it was evident that the process was being driven by political motives rather than legal principles.
“She will fight for her rights through the process, but any honest observer can see this is about politics, not law,” he said.
He criticised those justifying the process by citing constitutional provisions such as Articles 146 and 147, saying such arguments are either naive or deliberately misleading.
“Anyone claiming this is just a constitutional process under Article 146 or 147 is either complicit or unaware of the bigger picture. What’s happening is political, and everyone knows it,” he asserted.
Oppong Nkrumah further described the attempt to remove the Chief Justice as a calculated agenda.
“This was premeditated. It was announced in advance, advertised in the open. There’s nothing spontaneous about it,” he said.
He referenced comments made by then-opposition leader John Mahama, now President, where Mahama allegedly expressed intentions to reshape the judiciary by appointing more NDC-aligned judges.
“There are video clips where President Mahama clearly states that they believed the judiciary wasn’t working in their favour and that they planned to ‘correct’ it,” Oppong Nkrumah noted.
He also recalled past attacks on the judiciary, particularly during the 2020 election petition.
“I was part of the NPP legal team during that petition. I saw firsthand how the Chief Justice was vilified on social media insults, accusations of political bias, and efforts to link her to the NPP,” he recounted.
Oppong Nkrumah concluded that the legal process currently underway is merely a facade.
“This is a politically driven mission disguised as a legal process. It was planned, orchestrated, and now being executed under the cover of the law. The consequences of these actions will unfold in time,” he warned.
