Mosquito coil caused house fire that killed family in Abuakwa – GNFS
The Ghana National Fire Service(GNFS) has revealed that a mosquito coil caused a fire outbreak that claimed the lives of three family members at Abuakwa.
A mother and her two daughters died when fire razed their home in the Ashanti Region.
Personnel from GNFS and the Ghana Police launched an investigation into the incident to ascertain the cause of the fire.
After their investigations, the service revealed a burning mosquito coil in the house ignited the fire.
A statement from the GNFS said, “an unattended lit mosquito coil in close contact with room combustibles caused the heart-wrenching fire which claimed three lives and resulted in the destruction of three (3) bedrooms and their contents.”
The statement added that the extreme damage by the fire was due to late detection and a late call-up to the fire service.
Background
The fire gutted their four-bedroom house in the early hours of Wednesday, February 1, trapping them inside.
The mother, Abigail Yeboah, and her two daughters, Norah Yeboah, 9, and Philipa Yeboah, 6, were reportedly asleep when the fire started.
According to eyewitnesses, two other house occupants managed to escape unharmed.
Some residents who rushed to the scene to rescue the victims said they heard them screaming for help, but the fire was far advanced to allow entry into the house.
The intervention of firefighters, however, prevented the fire from spreading to other structures nearby.
The blazing fire destroyed the entire four-bedroom house.
