More women have registered to vote than men – EC notices ‘widening gap’
The Electoral Commission has revealed, there are more women who have registered to vote than the men.
Delivering an update on the ongoing voter registration exercise, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, indicated that there are some 500,000 more women than men.
“We have seen more women registering in this exercise than men,” she said and presented the latest figures.
Jean Mensa said, as at Monday, the EC had a total of 6,100,440 women as against 5,528,970 men who have registered.
This represents 52.5% of registered citizens being females and 47.5% men.
In her sixth edition of the ‘Let the Citizen Know’ press series on Monday, she indicated that while the trend was “not surprising, the gap is quite wide”.
The exercise which has has been grouped in five phases will end on August 6.
Persons Living With Disabilities
The EC acknowledged reports that some persons with disabilities who visited registration centres were not always given priority, as emphasised at their training programmes.
She apologised to the affected people who had hearing and speech disabilities and assured that the issue would be addressed.
She further encouraged persons with disabilities to take advantage of arrangements that have been put in place at the district, and regional EC offices for people with special needs.
At the end of the fourth phase, 46,237 persons with disabilities had successfully gone through the registration process representing 0.40% of the total number registered.
“These figures are very encouraging, and this is an indication of the unwavering interest that citizens have in who manages the reigns of leadership of our dear country,” Mrs Mensa added.
EC registers 11.6m for voter card
As the ongoing voter registration gets into the fifth phase, the EC has provided figures on the number of registered persons.
As of Friday, July 24, the total number of registered voters stood at 11,629,480.
The Greater Accra Region had the highest number of registrants totalling 2,615,925, followed by the Ashanti Region with 2,089,923.
In terms of gender, more women are registering than men with a wide gap.
The EC has registered 6,100,440 women as against 5,528,970 for men.
