The Advertising Association of Ghana (AAG) has issued a stark warning that more billboards could collapse, endangering lives and property, if urgent action is not taken ahead of the rainy season.
The association is raising alarms over the increasing number of billboards erected in unsafe locations, including pedestrian walkways and major intersections, creating serious public safety hazards.
AAG President, Andrews Ackah, expressed frustration over the authorities’ continued inaction despite repeated warnings and engagement efforts.
He emphasised the urgent need for stricter regulation and enforcement to prevent further disasters.
“This issue has been raised time and again, but it seems we only pay attention when tragedy strikes,” Ackah lamented. “With the rains approaching, we are going to see more billboards collapsing. It’s not a matter of if, but when. Lives have been lost, and properties have been damaged before, yet the necessary steps are still not being taken.”
He criticised authorities for failing to enforce existing laws, questioning whether the lack of action is due to reluctance or inefficiency.
“The laws exist, the regulations are clear, yet enforcement is weak. Authorities must take responsibility to ensure billboards meet safety standards, have the right permits, and undergo regular integrity tests.”
AAG is calling on regulators to act decisively before more accidents occur, urging immediate inspections and stricter oversight to prevent another preventable disaster.
