Mohammed Kudus headlines African nominees for Puskas Award
The FIFA Puskas Award- an annual award given to the footballer who scored the best goal in the FIFA football season under review- list has been released and four African players have been nominated for the top award.
Ghana’s Mohammed Kudus is among the nominees with the West Ham United midfielder’s brilliant solo goal against Freiburg in the 2023-2024 season making the grade.
Kudus’ goal was the first of a brace he scored in a 5-1 win over the German side in the Round of 16 stage in the UEFA Europa League. The goal marked a high point in Kudus’ brilliant debut season at West Ham.
The Black Stars player picked up the ball deep in his half and beat three Freiburg players with his brilliant solo run and tucked the ball into the goal before wheeling away to celebrate in his infamous “landlord style”.
Yassine Benzia of Algeria, Denis Omedi and Paul Onuachu of Nigeria are the other African players nominated for the award.
