Minority respond to the president’s address on Covid_19, describes it as lip service
The Minority in Parliament has responded to President Nana Akufo-Addo’s address on the coronavirus pandemic, describing it as a charade.
In an interview with GHOne, monitored by theghanareport.com, the Ranking Member of the Health Committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, accused the government of paying lip service to the pandemic.
“Ghana’s preparedness must be seen by all, and not shrouded in secret, if you walk to our boarders and various hospitals, you must see it. And that will give you some level of confidence, that even if we should have a case today, we will be able to contain it,” he said.
Reacting to the President’s announcement that his government was ready to commit $100 million to combat Covid_19, the Member of Parliament for Juaboso constituency said, announcing the money differed from accessing it.
“The delay in our preparedness is as a result of lack of funds, let no one pretend,” he insisted, adding that “We have had situations where sums of money have been announced in our budget backed by law, and the year will end without the money been released”
“We started talking about our preparedness even before WHO came in to score us zero for not been prepared,” he said.
“For me, what it means is that we must all work towards getting a robust system, that will help us combat the virus, should we record a case in Ghana,” he said.
Mr Akandoh insisted that Ghana was not as prepared as the President made it look.
“Walk to Osei Kojokrom in the Western-North Region, we share a border with Cote d’Ivoire and you won’t see anything that shows that we are prepared, let’s stop paying lip service to the issue and face it head-on,” he said.
The Minority has been bashing the government preparedness to control a coronavirus outbreak in Ghana.
