Minority raises alarm over GH₵100 airport service charge

The minority in Parliament has raised serious concerns about a proposed increase in airport passenger service charges from GH₵5 to GH₵100.

Okaikwei Central Member of Parliament, Patrick Boamah, described the proposed hike as “astronomical and unjustifiable,” warning that it could impose a heavy burden on travellers.

“Airport passenger service charge from GH₵5 to GH₵100 per passenger. The government is hiding this in the report. Mr Speaker, a thousand per cent increase in GH₵5 to GH₵100 per passenger for both domestic and international flights,” Boamah said.

He added that such a steep increase would worsen the already high cost of transportation and raise questions about transparency and fairness in policy decisions.

Boamah further noted that citizens are already struggling with expensive travel costs and questioned whether the adjustment aligns with promises to make transportation more affordable.

He called for clear communication and accountability before implementing any such changes.

Responding to the claims, the Minister for Transport stated that no such increase has been approved.

The minister explained that the figures cited by the MP are recommendations in the Fees Bill, which must undergo full Parliamentary scrutiny before any implementation.

He also clarified that the proposal is not intended for domestic travel and remains under discussion.

The exchange underscores the sensitivity around air travel costs and the importance of transparent communication with the public.

As the fees Bill progresses through Parliament, lawmakers and stakeholders will continue to monitor proposals to ensure they are fair and carefully considered.
