Minority issues 7-day ultimatum to BoG to disclose details on new headquarters
The Minority in Parliament has issued a 7-day ultimatum to the Bank of Ghana to furnish them with a comprehensive report regarding the cost of its new headquarters in Accra.
This is in accordance with the stipulations outlined in section 18 of the Right To Information Act (ACT 989).
In a letter signed by the Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga, the Minority also requested the full account of the processes surrounding the procurement of the land on which the new headquarters building is being erected.
Additionally, they are seeking disclosure of the identities of consultants and project managers involved in the endeavor.
Addressing the land procurement specifics, Ayariga inquired, “How was the land on which the new headquarters building of the Bank of Ghana currently under construction at Ridge in Accra procured, and at what price or under what arrangement and from whom?”.
The central bank is constructing a new head office in Accra, with an estimated cost of $250 million.
BoG explained that the current head office building no longer meets safety standards and poses potential risks.
“A structural integrity assessment conducted by the BoG revealed that the current BoG Head Office building, built by the Nkrumah Government in the early 1960s, is no longer fit for purpose and could not stand any major earth tremors,” an earlier statement said.
Acting Director-General of the Geological Survey Authority (GSSA), Isaac Mwinbelle, explained that “the latest earthquake, which occurred on the 10th of March this year, had its epicenter close to Jamestown. This indicates that seismic activity is shifting towards the current location of the Bank of Ghana”.
Below is the statement from the Minority.
