The Minority in Parliament is calling for stringent sanctions against Victoria Emeafa Hardcastle, the acting CEO of the Petroleum Commission, following allegations of contempt towards Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip.
The situation erupted after Hardcastle allegedly referred to Annoh-Dompreh’s conduct as “silly”, which has ignited widespread condemnation.
The incident on January 28, 2025, has raised serious concerns about respect for parliamentary authority.
Members from both the Majority and Minority sides expressed outrage, decrying Hardcastle’s comments as a disrespectful attack on the dignity of the legislative body.
In a statement released on January 29, 2025, the Minority Caucus, led by Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, called Hardcastle’s actions “egregious contempt of Parliament” and demanded immediate action.
They also referenced the K.T. Hammond v. William Ampem-Darko ruling, which affirms that no public official has the right to verbally or physically assault a Member of Parliament during their duties.
The Minority emphasised the potential dangers of inaction, warning that failure to address the issue would set a dangerous precedent, allowing future public officials to undermine the authority of Parliament.
