Minority demands sanctions against Sammy Gyamfi over dollar gift scandal
The Minority in Parliament is calling on President John Mahama to take decisive action against Sammy Gyamfi, the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), following a widely condemned video showing him handing out dollar bills to self-styled evangelist Patricia Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
The footage, which has since gone viral, sparked public outrage and led to an apology from Mr. Gyamfi.
However, members of the Minority insist that an apology is not enough.
Addressing the press in Parliament, Dr. Kabiru Tia Mahama, a member of the Finance Committee, described the incident as “a shameful display of financial recklessness and arrogance”.
“This single act encapsulates the arrogance, hypocrisy, and gross insensitivity that have come to define the NDC government under President John Dramani Mahama,” Dr. Mahama stated.
He condemned the gesture as a betrayal of public trust, particularly at a time when many Ghanaians are struggling with high inflation and a steep cost of living.

“This display of financial irresponsibility is not only tone-deaf, but it’s also a slap in the face of millions of citizens battling economic hardship,” he added.
Dr. Mahama also pointed out the irony of the situation, highlighting that Sammy Gyamfi had previously positioned himself as a vocal advocate of fiscal discipline and anti-corruption.
“It is especially disheartening that this act was committed by someone who has long championed cedi loyalty and economic prudence,” he said.
The Minority has urged President Mahama to demonstrate leadership by holding Mr. Gyamfi accountable, warning that failure to act decisively would further erode public confidence in the government.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has summoned the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, following the viral video.
Sources say that Mr Gyamfi has been requested to present himself before the Chief of Staff to clarify the circumstances surrounding the controversial gesture.
