Minority Backs Gertrude Torkornoo’s Nomination Despite Disagreements

The Minority in Parliament has given the green light for the nomination of Justice Gertrude Torkonoo as the next Chief Justice.

The approval comes despite the minority’s strong disagreements with a recent judgment by the Supreme Court annulling the election of James Gyakye Quayson in Assin North.

It will be recalled that Justice Torkornoo, who was part of the 7-member panel that decided the Assin North case, faced scrutiny from the minority during her vetting on May 26.

Initially, the minority had insisted that no decision be made on her nomination until the full judgment in the case was released.

A day after the release of the judgment, the minority, at a presser on Tuesday, June 6, said despite their differences with Justice Torkornoo, they believe she possesses the qualifications necessary to serve as Chief Justice.

The Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga spoke on behalf of the minority.

“Despite our disagreement with her jurisprudence, we recognize her qualifications for the esteemed position of Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana,” he said.

The NDC MPs emphasized the need to restore the reputation of the judiciary. They expressed hope that Justice Torkornoo would play a crucial role in restoring the dignity and credibility of the judicial system.

Highlighting Justice Torkornoo’s extensive experience, having served as a judge from the High Court to the Court of Appeal and eventually at the Supreme Court, the minority stated their belief in providing capable women with opportunities to hold key national positions.

With the path now clear, Justice Torkornoo is expected to be officially approved soon and sworn in to spearhead the affairs of the judiciary as the acting Chief Justice Jones Dotse will retire today.
