The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has launched an investigation into claims of Ghanaian passports being issued to foreign nationals.
This comes after viral videos on social media showed foreigners living in United Arab Emirates and other Gulf States in possession of Ghanaian passports.
In a statement, the ministry said its attention has been drawn to the videos circulating on social media and they are investigating the allegations to ascertain the truth.
“The ministry is investigating the said allegation and would take appropriate measures to deal with the situation if found to be true,” the statement said.
The release explained that the biometric processes involved in acquiring the Ghanaian passport currently are rigorous, which makes it challenging for unqualified people, especially foreigners to acquire the document.
The statement added that it is an offence under Ghanaian laws for a foreign national to acquire the Ghanaian passport.
“There have been a number of instances where the ministry in collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service and other law enforcement agencies has apprehended some individuals for attempting to acquire Ghanaian passports,” the statement noted.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured the public that it will continue to put in the relevant measures to ensure and uphold the integrity of the Ghanaian passport.
Meanwhile, they have cautioned against the circulation of unfounded claims on social media and encouraged individuals with evidence to approach the ministry for further action by the security agencies.
