Minister Extends ‘Pragyia’ And ‘Aboboyaa’ Ban To All Central Business Districts in Greater Accra
The Greater Accra Regional Co-ordinating Council (GARCC) has banned ‘Pragyia’ and ‘Aboboyaa’ operations in all the Central Business Districts (CBDs) of the region.
The decision was taken at the GARCC general meeting held on August 14, 2023, due to “heavy traffic congestion and chaotic scenes with indiscriminate packing and flouting of traffic regulations, among others” by the operators of ‘Pragyia’ and ‘Aboboyaa’.
This was further communicated in a statement signed by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey.
The affected areas include Accra Metropolitan, Krowor, Korle Klottey, Tema Metropolitan, La Dade Kotopon, La Nkwantanang Madina, Ayawaso East, Ayawaso West, Ayawaso Central, Ayawaso North, Ledzokuku, Okaikwei North and Adentan Municipal.
“The council, therefore, deems it very imperative and urgent to regulate the movement of these ‘Pragyia’ and ‘Aboboyaa’ and create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive and for the comfort of travellers,” the statement said.
The minister further tasked all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to enforce the ban.
Even though ‘Pragyia’ and ‘Aboboyaa’ drivers appealed to the minister to reconsider the decision when it was first announced in 2021, it was not reviewed because of the chaotic and reckless driving of the operators.
This forms part of initiatives to sanitise the capital.
