Military shake up: Akufo-Addo makes new appointments

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appointed two senior officers to fill key vacancies in the top hierarchy of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, who is currently the Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters of GAF, will take up the role of the Chief of Army Staff.

This follows the completion of the tour of duty and subsequent retirement from service of Major General William Ayamdo who held that position.

This will take effect on Tuesday, February 18, 2020.

Subsequently, Commodore Issah Adams Yakubu has been promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral, and also elevated to be the new Chief of Staff at General Headquarters of GAF, effective Wednesday, February 19, 2020.

Additionally, Brigadier General C.K. Awity, has been promoted to the rank of Major General, and will fill the role of Commandant of the Military Academy and Training Schools (MATS). This takes effect on February 19, 2020.

Major General Omane Agyekum is the current Commandant of the Military Academy and Training Schools (MATS), but set to retire from the GAF following the completion his tour of duty.

A statement signed by Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, which was released on Wednesday, said the President  made the appointments based on the recommendation of the Armed Forces Council.

The President  has expressed gratitude to generals Ayamdo and Omane Agyekum for their dedicated and meritorious services to the Ghana Armed Forces and to the nation.
